HUNTINGTON WOODS, Mich. –While winter snow still flies, South Oakland County Soccer is busy preparing for its spring 2010 soccer season. SOCS will hold open registration for the spring soccer season on: Thursday, February 4, 6-8 p.m. and Saturday, February 6, 9-11 a.m. Registration will take place at the
Huntington Woods Recreation Center
, 26325 Scotia, Huntington Woods.
SOCS offers play on recreational soccer teams for children aged 4 to 18, and players are grouped according to age, rather than ability, on teams led by parent coach volunteers. Parents can opt for co-ed team play, or all-girls teams for most age groups. The season will begin in April and run through mid-June. For more competitive play, SOCS also offers a premier division, with June 2010 tryouts for the seasonal year which begins in September 2010. SOCS also sponsors a soccer program for children with disabilities, called Total Outreach Program for Soccer, or TOPS. Participants learn soccer skills to encourage physical fitness and team play, plus participate in non-competitive soccer-related activities. Each season, SOCS supports over 1,200 players on 120 premier and recreational teams, and sponsors fun and skill-building summer camp opportunities for children in the Detroit metro area. "At SOCS, we recognize the importance of healthy outdoor exercise and offer all area kids the opportunity to learn what it means to be part of a team while playing a game that is both loved and recognized by people across the globe," said Matt Ciaramitaro, acting president of SOCS. In addition to regular league play, SOCS provides specialized professional training for recreational players through British Elite Soccer Training, a local soccer training organization, as well as small-group goalkeeper training. Families can learn more about SOCS by visiting the association’s website at
